Digital X-Rays

Digital dental X-rays are an advanced imaging technology that uses a sensor to capture digital images of the teeth and surrounding structures. We use this technology to diagnose dental problems, develop treatment plans, and monitor progress.

It has been proven that digital dental X-rays provide a more accurate image of the teeth and surrounding structures than traditional film X-rays. Digital images are clearer and more detailed, making them easier to interpret and analyze. Furthermore, digital dental X-rays require up to 90% less radiation exposure than traditional film X-rays, making them safer for patients. In addition, digital dental X-rays allow adjustments to the contrast and brightness of the image, making it easier to diagnose any problems.

Panoramic X-rays

Digital panoramic X-rays are a standard of care in dentistry and allow for the dental team to diagnose a number of oral health issues, including TMJ disorder, periodontal disease, cavities, infections, and even oral cancer. We use a state-of-the-art panoramic imaging unit, which utilizes a low-level X-ray beam to capture images of all the teeth, the bone supporting the teeth, the sinuses, and the jaw. Panoramic imaging utilizes an extraoral sensor that revolves around the patient’s head without the need of an intraoral X-ray sensor. This allows Dr. Ralston to visualize a patient’s dental anatomy for a more accurate diagnosis, all in one image.

Panoramic images are an excellent method to determine if a patient has wisdom teeth that are impacted. These images help Dr. Ralston determine whether there is enough space for the wisdom teeth to erupt healthily or if they need to be removed. While our team is trained in tooth extractions, some wisdom teeth are better left for an oral surgeon to remove (especially if they are impacted).

The panoramic imaging unit also allows our team to take extraoral bitewing images. This gives us an accurate image of the teeth and the bone to help diagnose cavities and periodontal disease. It also makes it easier for patients who have severe gag reflexes with the intraoral X-ray sensors, as well as children who cannot tolerate intraoral imaging. At Maven Smile Design, we pride ourselves on making every comfort available to our patients.

Intraoral Photographs

Another important diagnostic tool that Dr. Ralston utilizes is an intraoral camera to take high-resolution photos of the teeth, gums, and any areas of concern. This is not your ordinary phone camera; our intraoral camera is designed to take images up close to the teeth, even way back behind the back molars, in a comfortable and accurate manner.

Intraoral images are used to help diagnose cavities that may not be visible on X-rays, as well as any soft-tissue problems around the gums. It also serves as an educational tool, showing areas that are not being brushed as thoroughly as they should…it may even show areas that are being over-brushed, which can certainly cause problems.

Our team takes the time to take accurate images to help patients see exactly what issues are occurring in their mouths. Dr. Ralston then spends time describing these issues with his patients, as well as educating them on why these issues occur, how to treat them, and most importantly, how to prevent them in the future.
